There's no getting away from the winter now! There's a real bite in the air and the forecast of snow is imminent. It's also the time of year when the dreaded Flu does the rounds and brings suffering to many in the community. This is especially true for the older and vulnerable residents who Herts Careline monitors community alarms for. So its reassuring to know that we're here 24/7 to help you and your loved ones during this fraught period.
What is the flu?
A bad bout of flu is much worse than a heavy cold, and symptoms can come on suddenly and sometimes severely. They include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles, plus a cough and sore throat. Often people suffering with the flu will need to spend 2 or 3 days in bed. If you get complications caused by flu, a hospital visit might be in order.
If one of our service users believes they have the flu, we're here to get them medical help. Depending on the circumstances and level of severity, our dedicated call operators have the experience to summon the appropriate help, dependent on the procedures they follow. This may be asking a family member to check in on you, calling a Doctor to request an appointment or home visit, or summoning the Emergency Services if required.
As always, prevention is the best way forward, so if you're eligible for a Flu vaccination, please speak to your doctor.
