How it works
The Herts Bernie pendant is a small device that combines the functions of a mobile phone with a Global Positioning System (GPS) locator.
If you get disorientated or need help while you're away from home, simply press the SOS button to speak to linked responder (family member or friend) or our operator, who can:
- check that you're OK
- tell you where you are
- give you directions to your destination or a safe location
- contact a relative or friend to come and help you
- call emergency services, if needed.

For legal reasons, the Herts Bernie service is only available to people who have the mental capacity to freely consent to it and sign a service agreement contract.
However, as from 11 June 2018, if you care for a person without this mental capacity and feel it is in their best interest to have this service, you can enter into the service agreement on their behalf. All we need is for a health or social care professional to authorise a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) assessment. The assessment is required because the service can locate the person using the device, so we need professional assurance that it does not infringe on their liberty.
We’ve launched this service to give your love ones the freedom to leave their home and go about their daily lives with help on hand if they need it, with more reassurance for you. You can request a DoLS assessment by contacting Hertfordshire County Council’s Adult Social Services Team on 01438 843800, email firstname.lastname@example.org, visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk or write to Hertfordshire County Council, SFAR 016 Ground Floor, Farnham House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 2FQ
